  • Description / Begonia Fimbriata Red and Orange Blend Bulbs

Begonia Fimbriata Red and Orange Blend contains tuberous begonias that grow to a mature size of approximately 18 inches tall and 18 inches wide. Long blooming, these begonias flower from early summer to first frost, setting large, fringy double flowers that are ruffled, highly fragrant, and come in shades of red and orange. The flowers are set against a backdrop of dark, veiny green foliage for a truly breathtaking display.

Fimbriata Red and Orange Blend contains Begonia × tuberhybrida varieties, commonly called begonias or hybrid tuberous begonias, native to Bolivia and Peru. These plants are tender perennials in Zones 9-10 but are usually grown as annuals or as houseplants in cooler regions. They have a mounded habit that's perfect for containers, window boxes, and small-space gardens.

Fimbriata Red and Orange Blend begonia varieties grow best in a partially shady spot with some sun, but they do tolerate full shade. However, best flowering occurs with some sun, preferably morning sun in warmer climates. Tuberous begonias thrive in slightly acidic soil (5.5-6.5 pH) that is rich with organic matter and evenly moist, not overly wet. Soil must drain freely or tubers will rot. Remove wilted flowers and leaves to promote more blooms. Fimbriata Red and Orange Blend begonia varieties are deer resistant.

Plant these begonia bulbs in groups in warmed spring soil after the threat of frost has passed, spaced 8 to 14 inches apart and 1 to 2 inches deep. In northern climates, start tubers indoors in late winter or early spring to bloom by summer. Begonias struggle in hot regions, like the Deep South, and in arid conditions, like in the desert Southwest, and may need very special attention to survive.
