Espoma Organic Charcoal is a natural soil amendment designed to improve soil structure and support better drainage in containers and specialty plantings. Made from 100 percent hardwood charcoal, it is produced through a high heat process called pyrolysis, where untreated hardwoods are heated without oxygen. The result is a high carbon material that helps create a healthier growing environment by improving air and water movement in the soil.

This product is especially useful in potting mixes where drainage and soil balance are important. It can be used in containers with or without drainage holes as well as in terrariums. Its clean, natural composition contains no additives or fillers and is approved for organic gardening. Safe for people, pets, and the environment, it fits well into sustainable gardening practices.

For containers with drainage holes, mix up to 2 cups of Espoma Organic Charcoal per cubic foot of potting soil, or use 1 heaping tablespoon per quart. For containers without drainage holes, add a 1 to 2 inch layer at the bottom before adding potting mix. For terrariums, begin with a clean, dry container, add a base layer of small gravel, then apply a 1 half to 1 inch layer of charcoal. Add a 1 inch layer of sphagnum peat moss to help separate the soil from the drainage layer, then top with potting mix and plant as desired.
