Description / Anemone 'Whirlwind'
Among the most beautiful of all Japanese Windflowers, 'Whirlwind' lives up to its name with petals that look ruffled by the breeze! Semi-double and quite large, these white flowers fill the fall landscape with fresh, much-needed color, and are exquisite for cutting. Add 'Whirlwind' to the sunny to lightly shaded garden this season for years of glorious late-season color to come!
The flowers are daisy-shaped, with several layers of white petals, the edges ruffed and curled as if in motion. The petals surround a bright yellow center tinged with green, and the entire bloom reaches up to 3 inches wide. Very long-lasting on sturdy stems, they are a mainstay of the autumn bouquet.
'Whirlwind' is a particularly free-flowering variety, thanks to its superior branching. Mature plants will fill in the available space, often spreading wider than the 2 to 2½ feet normally expected. The dark green foliage, massed at the base of the plant, is handsome all season. Cut it back after the flowers pass, so it will reappear fresh and more profuse than ever in spring.
'Whirlwind' is a perennial for cool-summer and temperate climates, for it dislikes humidity. That said, it tolerates wet conditions very well, is left alone by rabbits and even deer, and attracts the last butterflies of the season to its bright blooms! In flower it reaches 3 to 4 feet high, a majestic sight in any setting. And its white flowers complement all neighboring colors.
