  • Description / Aquilegia 'Crimson Star' Columbine

Aquilegia 'Crimson Star' is a columbine variety that grows 24 to 36 inches tall and blooms in spring. Exceptionally eye-catching, the long-spurred, bell-shaped blooms are relatively large and multicolored with varying shades of red and white. Rising above a lush, compact mound of basal leaves that resemble fern fronds, the outward-facing flowers beckon bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Borne on erect stem, they also make nice cut flowers for spring bouquets.

An Aquilegia hybrid, commonly known as columbine, crowfoots, or granny's bonnets, 'Crimson Star' is a hardy herbaceous perennial (Zones 3-8) that bridges the gap between early spring bulbs and summer bloomers. When planted in large groups, it creates a striking display in borders, rock gardens, cottage gardens, shade gardens, and woodland gardens. Columbines naturalize easily without becoming invasive, making them ideal for naturalized areas. They also make beautiful ground cover after their blooms fade; however, the foliage will naturally die back during the summer months.

'Crimson Star' columbine is incredibly low maintenance and versatile, thriving in sunny to partially shaded spots with average, medium moist, well-drained soil. Remove flower stalks after blooming to encourage re-blooming. They are also resistant to deer.

For best results, plant 'Crimson Star' columbine roots in spring, spacing them 12 to 18 inches apart and burying them 1½ to 2 inches deep.
