  • Description / Aquilegia Mixed Columbine

Aquilegia Mixed Columbine contains a grower's choice assortment of bicolored varieties. Packed at random, each pack is unique. To maximize your chance of color range, plant several packs. These columbine varieties grow 24 to 36 inches tall and bloom in spring. Columbines are known and appreciated for their unusual bonnet-like flowers and their mound of basal leaves that resemble fern fronds. The nodding, vibrantly colored, tubular blooms are nectar rich and one of the earliest sources for pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

The Aquilegia varieties in this mix are commonly called columbines, crowfoots and granny's bonnets. They are cold-hardy, herbaceous perennials in Zones 3-8 and help fill the gap between early spring bulbs and summer-blooming plants. Planted in large groups, they create a stunning garden display in borders, rock gardens, cottage gardens, shade gardens, and woodland gardens. They naturalize freely without being invasive, so they're perfect for naturalized areas and make gorgeous ground cover after blooming. However, the foliage will wither away during the summer months.

Mixed Columbine varieties are so easy to grow, they can be planted almost anywhere. They grow best in a partially shady spot with average, medium moist, freely draining soil, but they can take more sun in northern zones. Remove flower stalks after blooming to encourage re-blooming. Deer resistant.

Plant Columbine roots in spring, spacing them 12 to 18 inches apart and 1½ to 2 inches deep.
