Description / Cercis 'Appalachian Red'
One of the most stunning selections of our native Eastern Redbud, 'Appalachian Red' is a blaze of spring color, its blooms a vivid shade of deep fuchsia red. Very profuse and long-lasting, the flowers are an unforgettable opening to the growing season in any garden!
The blooms arise before the foliage, liberally decorating the bare dark brown branches. Cut entire stems for indoor display, and be sure to site this tree where it will stand out like the landmark it is!
The heart-shaped foliage emerges in mid- to late-spring, large and colored a rich shade of blue-green. It keeps this color all summer, then turns a pleasing yellow for autumn before dropping. Very ornamental!
'Appalachian Red' was discovered growing beside a road in Maryland, and was released by the University of Tennessee. It has since won the Dr. Max Byrkit Award, and we expect that this is only the first of many honors to come. Color this vibrant and came this easy are nto a common occurrence!
Consider combining 'Appalachian Red' with a white-flowered Redbud, and of course use it as an exclamation point for the spring-blooming bulb garden. Untroubled by most pests and diseases, this hardy native withstands heat, humidity, and less than ideal soil. Expect it to reach 15 to 25 feet tall and wide at maturity. Zones 4-9.
