  • Description / Bergera Curry Leaf Tree

Bergera Curry Leaf Tree is a luscious semi-dwarf tropical to sub-tropical tree or shrub that is valued not only for its delicious, highly aromatic leaflets, which can be snipped for cooking, but also for ornamental purposes and can fit beautifully into an edible landscape. The tree blooms sporadically throughout the year in clusters of fragrant white flowers, followed by small fruits that turn bluish-black when ripe. Fruits are edible and have a subtly sweet, peppery taste with a hint of citrus, but the seeds are toxic and should not be consumed. A culinary staple around the world, the small, slender leaves have a strong flavor similar to citrus, anise, and lemongrass. However, when cooked, the leaves take on a milder, slightly pungent flavor and a nutty aroma.

Grown in the garden, Bergera Curry Leaf Tree can reach 6 to 15 feet tall at full maturity. Grown in a container, the tree will be much smaller. However, it can be pruned to maintain any desired size and shape. And in cooler climates, container-grown trees can be moved indoors at the first sign of frost and grown as a houseplant during winter, if plenty of bright sunlight is provided through a south-facing window.

Also known as Murraya koenigii or Bergera koenigii, Bergera Curry Leaf Tree, a broadleaf evergreen (Zones 9-11), is a small tree with a loose, upright habit of small, slender, oval-shaped leaves that grow pinnately along the stems. It makes an excellent accent or specimen.

Bergera Curry Leaf Tree prefers temperatures between 65° and 90°F, requires at least 6 to 8 hours of full sun a day, and grows best in rich, evenly moist, well-draining loams. It should be planted in a warm, sheltered location outside and protected from frost. Water moderately, allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry out between waterings. Curry leaf plants benefit from an application of a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season—spring and summer. The tree is self-pollinating and will bear fruit without any pollen from other varieties.

NOTE: Do not eat the seeds. The seeds are toxic.
