Description / Athyrium Lady Fern
Athyrium Lady Fern is a widely adaptable deciduous fern that grows to a mature size of 12 to 36 inches tall. A graceful beauty with a dainty appearance that's perfect for small-space gardens, it adorns the garden for three seasons with feathery fronds that are light green in color and grow in an erect, circular clump.
Athyrium filix-femina, commonly called lady fern, is a cold-hardy native perennial (Zones 3-9) with an extensive native range, typically growing in rich, moist woods, thickets, fields, meadow, and ravines, in the wild. Unfortunately, wild lady fern populations are now endangered, but you can help ensure their survival by planting some in your own garden. And our nursery propagated plants are only commercially grown, never collected from the wild. Lady fern is ideal for growing along shady streams and ponds, but it's also a great addition to shade gardens, woodland gardens, and even rock gardens. It can also be grown on slopes to control soil erosion. Lady fern is a perfect companion for trilliums and Virginia bluebells.
Dependable and very low maintenance, Lady fern thrives in humus-rich, freely draining soil but is happy in average, moist soil. Lady fern is not too fussy and adapts well to less-than-ideal conditions. Crown rot, which can set in with poor drainage, is just about its only enemy. Once it becomes established in the garden, lady fern needs very little attention; however, watering it regularly, adding a layer of mulch, and cutting back fronds as they die out will keep this lady fern looking its best, especially if grown in a sunnier spot.
Plant Athyrium lady fern roots in spring, setting them 18 inches apart and 1/2 inch deep.
