Description / Phlox 'Red Wing'
Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit
Phlox 'Red Wing' is a showy evergreen perennial offering mid to late spring interest. Blooming profusely, the plant sets masses of loose, terminal clusters dense with starry, 5-petaled flowers, creating a bright carpet of red-eyed, dark pink blooms that bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds adore.
A Phlox subulata variety, commonly called moss phlox, moss pink, mountain phlox, or creeping phlox, Phlox 'Red Wing' is an herbaceous plant that has a vigorous, spreading habit, forming a cushiony mat of small, needle-like, dark green foliage. This groundcover is shown to best effect when massed or grouped in beds and borders. The dense mat is also excellent for underplanting and for erosion control on slopes and banks.
Extremely cold hardy, Phlox 'Red Wing' prefers full sun and humusy, medium moisture, well-drained soil but is tolerant of a wide range of soils, including chalk, loam, sandy, dry, and rocky soil. The plant is also drought, air pollution, and salt tolerant and deer resistant.
A native plant, it is indigenous to North America. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
