  • Description / Cercis Carolina Sweetheart™ Red Bud

Carolina Sweetheart Redbud is a colorful selection that brings changing foliage and seasonal interest to the landscape from spring through fall. Dark pink flowers cover the branches in early spring before the leaves emerge. As new growth appears, the foliage creates a striking display of purple, white, green, and hot pink variegation that gives the tree a carnival of color. By summer, the foliage matures to green, creating an ever changing display that stands out in garden beds and specimen plantings.

This upright, deciduous redbud works beautifully as a specimen tree, focal point, or understory planting in mixed borders and landscape beds. Early spring flowers provide an important nectar source for bees, while the colorful foliage adds months of ornamental appeal. Its rounded crown and multi trunked habit create an attractive architectural presence that pairs well with flowering shrubs, spring bulbs, hydrangeas, hostas, and shade tolerant perennials.

Grow Carolina Sweetheart Redbud in part shade to full sun in average, well drained soil rich in organic matter. It performs best with consistent moisture and benefits from afternoon shade in hotter summer climates. Avoid poorly drained sites, and plant young trees in their permanent location since redbuds can be difficult to transplant once established. Hardy in Zones 4 through 9, this easy care tree typically matures 15 to 30 feet tall with a spread of 15 to 35 feet, providing years of colorful landscape interest.
