The brightest red Calla of all, 'Red Alert' is a real show off, blooming brightly throughout midsummer in the shady garden and dazzling in the window indoors. The flowers are lovely for cutting, but they add so much sizzle to the shade that you might be tempted to leave them on the plant and enjoy their outdoor impact instead!
The color is a true scarlet infused with red, dazzling with all the neon boldness of which Mother Nature is capable. The flowers (actually spathes) arise in good numbers on plants just 20 to 24 inches high. The blooms are banked by handsome dark green foliage that is spotted with cream. Cut a few leaves while you're gathering blooms for the vase--the winsome foliage is colorful, and makes terrific filler and background color!
Calla Lilies are moisture lovers, and don't mind wet feet. This makes 'Red Alert' a good choice for the waterside planting or bog garden as well as containers and the shade garden. A fine houseplant, it blooms outdoors in midsummer and is fantastic as a cut-flower. Even the foliage is attractive!
