Description / Fragaria 'Flamingo' Strawberry
'Flamingo' strawberry is an attractive, low-growing plant that's suitable for an edible landscape. It grows 8 to 10 inches tall and sets five-petaled, pollinator-attracting flowers that bring in the butterflies and mature into distinctive pale-pink berries. A day-neutral variety, 'Flamingo' produces fruit throughout the growing season regardless of the length of daylight hours. Being less sensitive to daylight allows the plants to produce fruit continuously throughout the growing season, providing a consistent supply of berries over a longer period. The medium to large fruits have a soft and juicy texture, fragrant aroma, and delicate, sweet flavor with just a hint of tartness.
A Fragaria x ananassa variety, commonly called strawberry, 'Flamingo' is an herbaceous, hybrid perennial (Zones 5-8) that will spread by above-ground runners that root and form new plants, increasing the harvest each year. But 'Flamingo' strawberry can also be grown as an annual in a patio pot or hanging basket.
Grow 'Flamingo' strawberry in a sunny location with 6+ hours of direct sun each day. Although strawberries are adaptable to a range of climates, they prefer mild, temperate climates. 'Flamingo' strawberry is deer resistant.
Plant 'Flamingo' non-GMO strawberry roots in spring after the danger of frost has passed, spacing them 12 to 24 inches apart and 2 to 3 inches deep with their crowns at soil level. Before planting, remove the rubber band, rinse the roots, and gently separate them.
