Description / Paeonia 'Charlie's White'
Over half a century after its introduction in 1951 this pristine Peony is still the reigning champion of its kind. As if eager to please its many followers, this inspiring flower blooms earlier than most and gives of a radiance that is simply unparalleled. Ample single flowerheads of purest white span up to 8" across and have almost a heavenly golden glow at the center of its profusion of petals. Like all Peonias Charlie's White is quite long lived, pest free, and make excellent cut flowers and everlastings. The reason deer, rabbits and other pests don't bother it is because of its high phenol content. While these bulbous perennials bloom from spring to summer, you can enjoy the beauty of its foliage all year long as it hosts reddish leaves in early spring and bronze/purple foliage for fall.
Charlie's White is a sun-loving perennial that needs well-drained soil to thrive. If you're like me and can't have just one Peony, be sure to space them well giving them about 3 to 4 ft of breathing room. If you live in a climate with severe winter weather, make sure the eyes are 1 to 2 inches below the surface of the soil (and top with mulch). In warmer areas, cover with an inch of soil and mulch lightly for winter.
