  • Description / Phlox 'Orchid Green'

Phlox 'Orchid Green' is a tall garden phlox that grows vigorously and fully matures in about 3 years, reaching its full size of approximately 24 to 48 inches tall with a similar, slightly smaller spread. 'Orchid Green' is a unique phlox that blooms continuously all summer, setting large clusters dense with bubbly blossoms in gorgeous pale green hues. Borne on stately stems, the fragrant flowers are nectar rich and attract masses of pollinators, including butterflies and hummingbirds. They make stunning cut flowers for unusually beautiful and chic summer bouquets.

The 'Orchid Green' cultivar of Phlox paniculata, also called tall phlox or garden phlox, is a reliable perennial for Zones 4-8. A beloved summer-blooming plant, tall garden phlox is a hallmark of cottage gardens and a key feature in perennial beds and borders. Its showy blooms make it a favorite in cutting gardens and butterfly gardens alike.

'Orchid Green' tall garden phlox thrives in sunny to partly sunny spots with rich, well-drained soil that retains moisture. To maintain healthy plants, water regularly, particularly during dry periods; use mulch in summer to keep the roots cool and moist; and ensure good air circulation. Fertilize in spring to support robust growth. Deadheading spent flowers promotes continuous blooming, and taller stems may require staking for stability. As a bonus, this variety is naturally resistant to deer and other hungry critters.

For optimal growth, plant 'Orchid Green' phlox in spring, spacing roots 18 to 24 inches apart and burying them 1½ to 2 inches deep.

Indigenous to central and eastern parts of the U.S., Phlox paniculata is a native species that thrives in local climates and soils. These native plants are not only beautiful but also eco-friendly, requiring minimal fertilizers or extra watering once established. They act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in gardens. Adding native plants like phlox fosters biodiversity, enhances pollinator habitats, and creates lively, sustainable gardens.
