  • Description / Phlox 'Popeye'

Phlox 'Popeye' is a tall garden phlox that grows to a mature size of approximately 24 to 48 inches tall with a slightly smaller spread. 'Popeye' phlox blooms heavily and continuously from midsummer through early fall, setting large, eye-catching clusters of intricate white flowers with a pink eye on tall, stately stems. Fragrant and nectar-rich, they attract pollinators, including butterflies and hummingbirds. With its abundance of blooms, 'Popeye' provides lots of flowers to cut, while still leaving plenty in the garden for pollinators.

A Phlox paniculata cultivar, commonly called tall phlox, garden phlox, or simply phlox, 'Popeye' is a hardy perennial in Zones 4-8. Phlox is a quintessential cottage garden plant and a staple of perennial beds and borders. It's a must-have in cutting gardens and butterfly gardens.

'Popeye' tall garden phlox grows best in a sunny to partially sunny spot with rich, organic, moist soil that is freely draining. Keep plants watered, especially in droughts or dry spells; add a summer mulch to keep roots moist and cool; provide good air circulation; and fertilize annually in spring. Deadhead faded flowers to encourage continuous blooming. Taller stems may need staking. Deer and critter resistant.

Plant 'Popeye' phlox in spring, spaced 18 to 24 inches apart and 1½ to 2 inches deep.

Phlox paniculata is a native species indigenous to the central and eastern U.S. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
