  • Description / Phlox 'Starburst'

Phlox 'Starburst' is a tall garden phlox that grows vigorously, reaching a mature size of approximately 24 to 48 inches tall with a similar, slightly smaller spread in year 3. 'Starburst' phlox blooms continuously all summer, setting large clusters of pink flowers on tall, sturdy stems. The fragrant and nectar-rich flowers are a magnet for pollinators, including butterflies and hummingbirds, and make gorgeous cut flowers for seemingly endless summer bouquets.

'Starburst' is a cultivar of Phlox paniculata, which is commonly called tall phlox, garden phlox, or simply phlox. This hardy perennial thrives in Zones 4-8 and stands up beautifully to adverse weather conditions. Tall garden phlox is a classic choice for cottage gardens as well as for perennial beds and borders. It's an essential addition to cutting gardens and butterfly gardens, providing vibrant, long-lasting blooms.

'Starburst' garden phlox flourishes in sunny to partially sunny locations with rich, moist, porous soil that drains freely but holds enough water for the roots. Add organic amendments, like ground bark to heavy clay soils or peat moss to sandy soils to reach the right consistency. Keep the plants consistently watered, especially during droughts or dry spells, and apply a summer mulch to retain soil moisture and regulate root temperature. Ensure good air circulation to prevent disease and fertilize annually in spring for healthy growth. Deadheading faded blooms encourages prolonged flowering, while taller stems may need staking for support. This variety is naturally deer resistant.

Plant 'Starburst' phlox roots in spring, spacing them 18 to 24 inches apart and planting roots 1½ to 2 inches deep with roots facing down.

A native species, Phlox paniculata originates from the central and eastern United States. Native plants like phlox are not only visually stunning but also environmentally sustainable. Adapted to regional climates and soils, they require little to no additional watering once established. They also serve as natural pest deterrents, reducing pesticide use in the garden. Incorporating native plants supports biodiversity, enhances habitats for wildlife and pollinators, and helps create vibrant, thriving landscapes.
