  • Description / Gladiolus 'Passos' Bulbs

A captivating beauty, 'Passos' is a large-flowering gladiolus that creates an air of sophistication in the summer garden. Rising on an elegant, elongated stems to a staggering height of 48 to 58 inches, the grand, towering flower stalks boast lavender blooms with random purple stripes on petal edges and purple throats that pop with just a splash of red. The flowers rise above long, sword-like leaves and open from the bottom up for a long-lasting display of color. Florist quality, they make excellent cut flowers for monofloral bouquets and mixed floral arrangements.

A Gladiolus x hortulanus variety, commonly called gladiolus, glads, or sword lilies, 'Passos' is a perennial in Zones 7-10. Planting 'Passos' gladiolus in groups or masses creates an impressive floral display within beds, borders, containers, and even rock gardens. Stake this tall variety in windy locations for extra support.

'Passos' glads are low-maintenance flowers that thrive in sunny or partially shaded areas with rich, well-draining soil that retains moisture. Improve sandy or clay-heavy soils with organic materials like bark or peat moss to enhance water retention and drainage. Apply fertilizer sparingly after planting and once more in summer. Water thoroughly during planting and regularly as the plants grow and bloom. Add mulch to help the soil stay cool and retain moisture.

Plant 'Passos'gladiolus bulbs (corms) in a wind-sheltered area after the final frost. Space them 4 to 6 inches apart and plant them 4 to 6 inches deep in warm soil. Plant all at once or every two weeks for a prolonged flowering season. Once blooming ends, allow the foliage to grow until it browns or frost approaches. Lift the corms, dry and clean them, and store in a cool, dry place (40-50°F) for the winter months.
