  • Description / Hosta 'Guacamole' Plantain Lily

A medium-sized premium variety, Hosta 'Guacamole' is grown for its dramatic ornamental foliage that rises 12 to 18 inches tall. Its broad, oval to heart-shaped leaves are chartreuse-gold with irregular darker bluish green margins, reminiscent of an avocado. Hosta 'Guacamole' has some sun tolerance, and if exposed to sunlight, the leaf centers turn brighter gold. Funnel-shaped, highly fragrant pale lavender to white flowers, borne on long scapes, bloom late summer, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. The flowers make nice additions to mixed floral arrangements.

A Hosta hybrid, commonly called hosta or plantain lily, Hosta 'Guacamole' is a sport of H. 'Fragrant Bouquet'. It's an herbaceous rhizomatous perennial with an upright, mounding habit and rapid growth rate. Highly versatile, hosta looks best when grouped or massed in beds and borders, where its large leaves create a great cover for dying bulb foliage. But Hosta 'Guacamole' is also a lovely specimen or container plant and is perfect for edging.

Cold hardy to Zone 3, Hosta 'Guacamole' is so easy to grow and maintain that it's virtually maintenance free—just clip out faded flowers. It thrives in partially shady to full shade locations with rich, consistently moist, well-draining soil having a slightly acidic to neutral pH. It tolerates a wide range of soils, but prolonged periods of direct sunlight should be avoided. Plant Hosta 'Guacamole' bulbs 3 to 4 feet apart and 1.5 to 2 inches deep in fall. Fall-planted perennials tend to grow larger faster. Although drought tolerant once established, hosta plants should not be allowed to dry out for long.

Shade garden stunners, hostas are low-maintenance perennials. Known for their variety of leaf colors and sizes, you can plant an entire shade garden using only hostas.
