  • Description / Hydrangea Powerball™ Panicle Hydrangea

A Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs variety, Hydrangea Powerball™ Panicle Hydrangea is a compact, deciduous shrub that grows to a mature size of between 3 and 6 feet tall and wide. A winning combination, Powerball has all the toughness and hardiness of a panicle hydrangea (H. paniculata) but with the large, rounded flowerheads usually associated with a big leaf hydrangea (H. macrophylla). Strong, sturdy stems hold the flowerheads firmly upright on the shrub from early to late summer. Emerging lime green, the densely packed florets turn creamy white as they age and present in a beautiful array of pink hues when fully mature. The flowers are excellent additions to cut-flower bouquets and mixed arrangements, fresh or dried. If left on the plant, they offer interesting texture as caramel color to the winter garden.

A Hydrangea paniculata cultivar, commonly called panicle hydrangea, Powerball is a multi-stemmed shrub with a compact, upright, rounded habit that's versatile enough for today's smaller gardens or landscapes. Powerball is best massed or grouped in a bed or shrub border but it's also a gorgeous specimen in a container or accent in a foundation planting.

Powerball is easy to grow, reliable, and one of the most winter hardy hydrangeas—to Zone 3. It grows best in a sunny to partly sunny location with average, freely draining soil, but it tolerates clay soils and resists disease.

Discover tips to ensure your hydrangeas thrive, from soil preparation to pruning techniques, by following our expert advice on the Hydrangea Planting and General Care Guide and the How to Prune Hydrangea Plants blog.

Under the right fall conditions, some panicle hydrangeas can blush pink or red. The magic happens when cool nights meet the right genetic traits. In warmer zones, the color may stay closer to white, but the effect is gorgeous either way.
