  • Description / Magnolia Moonglow®

Magnolia Moonglow® is a medium-sized flowering evergreen (semievergreen in colder regions) tree with a vase-shaped form, growing approximately 15 to 35 feet high with a spread of 10 to 20 feet. This magnolia's elegant lemony-scented ivory blossoms are set against a backdrop of glossy dark green leaves with attention-grabbing silvery undersides that make the tree sparkle in the breeze. The waxy 2- to 3-inch cup-shaped flowers open from beautiful fat buds in mid-spring to early summer and may continue sporadically through summer, attracting butterflies. Ornamental cone-like fruits with bright reds seeds follow in fall, providing an important food source for migrating birds.

A Magnolia virginiana cultivar, commonly called sweet bay magnolia and also known as M. virginiana 'Jim Wilson', Moonglow has an upright habit and a vigorous growth rate. The trunk often becomes gracefully twisted and lightly gnarled, adding to its charm and character. Moonglow magnolia makes a lovely specimen tree and is a great option for lawns, foundations, near patios, ponds, and streams, or along woodland edges, especially nice when planted with rhododendron and azaleas .

An easy-grow, low maintenance tree, sweet bay magnolia grows best in sunny to dappled shade locations with rich, moist, well-draining soil, but it tolerates wet, boggy soils and does quite well in clay soils.

A native tree, Magnolia virginiana is indigenous to the southeastern United States and grows wild in swamps, low woods, savannas, and along the coast. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
