Description / Magnolia 'Vulcan'
Among the darkest red of any Magnolia ever introduced, 'Vulcan' is a knockout from 300 feet away! These huge blooms simply glow with rich, ruby-red color, darkening still further if the weather turns chilly! The young tree is slender and elegant, making a fine specimen, mass planting, or accent in the garden!
The blooms of 'Vulcan' are fully 10 to 12 inches across, arising in early to mid-spring. You won't have to wait very long to begin enjoying them either, because this tree starts blossoming at a very young age! Vigorous and easy to grow, it reaches 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide in 10 years. As it matures, it becomes less open-branched and more broadly dense.
'Vulcan' was bred in New Zealand by renowned Magnolia expert Felix Jury. This Magnolia is quite cold-hardy, and thrives in nearly any type of soil. Trees should be planted 8 to 10 feet apart for dense, even coverage. Zones 5-9.
