  • Description / Monarda Mix Bee Balm

Monarda Mix Bee Balm contains hybridized native wildflowers that grow 24 to 48 inches tall and bloom profusely in July and August. The dense, rounded clusters of tubular flowers sit atop square stems and display striking pink, purple, and red hues. Their citrusy, tea-like fragrance and nectar-rich blooms attract bumblebees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to the garden. Both the flowers and the aromatic, mint-scented leaves are edible, with the leaves often used to flavor teas, beverages, and desserts.

These Monarda didyma varieties, commonly known as bee balm or bergamot, are hardy herbaceous perennial suited for Zones 4-10. These vigorous plants return reliably when grown in the appropriate Zones. They also spread by creeping rhizomes and self-seeding, easily forming lush colonies. Ideal for naturalized plantings, Monarda Mix bee balm varieties work beautifully when massed along streams, around ponds, or in butterfly and cottage gardens. With their upright habit, they also make a standout border or specimen plant in both garden beds and containers.

Monarda Mix bee balm varieties are highly adaptable and thrive in a wide range of conditions. They grow best in sunny to lightly shaded spots, with full sun promoting optimal flowering. However, in hot summer climates, some afternoon shade can help prevent stress. Bee balms prefer rich, moisture-retentive soil and should not be allowed to dry out completely. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and keeps the roots cool. Regularly deadheading spent flowers extends the blooming period and minimizes unwanted self-seeding. Naturally resistant to deer.

Plant Monarda Mix bee balm roots in spring, burying them 1½ to 2 inches deep and spacing them 18 inches apart.

Monarda didyma varieties are native species originating in eastern North America, from Maine to Minnesota and south to Missouri and Georgia. Native plants like these are both beautiful and eco-friendly. Adapted to local climates and soils, they thrive without fertilizers or frequent watering once established. They also act as natural pest deterrents, reducing the need for chemical pesticides. Incorporating native plants into your landscape promotes biodiversity, supports pollinators, and provides essential food and shelter for wildlife, creating a thriving, vibrant garden.
