Description / Paeonia 'Prairie Charm' Itoh Peony
Paeonia 'Prairie Charm' is a compact Itoh peony that grows to a mature size of 36 inches tall with a slightly wider spread. A heavy early- to late-summer bloomer, it sets unique buttery yellow blooms with loads of petals and a ring of golden stamens surrounding green carpels delicately tipped in creamy white set against a scarlet heart. The large flowers have a light, lovely scent and are displayed against a backdrop of lush, refined, dark green leaves on long, sturdy stems, which are perfect for cutting. The foliage adds texture and color to the garden throughout the summer and takes on shades of purple or gold in autumn.
An Itoh peony, also called an intersectional peony, 'Prairie Charm' is a rare hybrid cross between a tree peony and an herbaceous peony, exhibiting the best qualities of both. Small and bushy, 'Prairie Charm' peony fits almost anywhere and makes a stunning specimen in mixed beds and borders. But it's shown to best effect when grouped and makes a lovely low hedge or back drop for spring bulbs. With proper placement and care, this sturdy, cold hardy (Zones 3-8) plant can live for 100 years or more.
Adaptable, easy to grow, and low maintenance, 'Prairie Charm' peony grows best in a sunny to partially shady spot location sheltered from strong winds with humus-rich, medium moist, freely draining soil. Prune foliage to the ground in late fall. Naturally resists deer and rabbits.
Plant the 'Prairie Charm' Itoh root in spring to a depth of 1½ to 2 inches deep, spaced 48 inches apart, if planting more than one. Peonies are one of the best perennials for cold climates, as they require a prolonged winter chill to break dormancy and grow well.
