Description / Caladium 'White Wonder' Bulbs
'White Wonder' is a strap leaf caladium grown for its bold, multicolor foliage. Lush and elegant, its elongated, arrowhead-shaped leaves are white to grey green with light pink to white veins and mottled dark and light green borders. The plant has a mounding, upright, intermediate habit and a rapid growth rate, reaching a mature size of approximately 12 to 18 inches tall. Throughout summer, the plant may produce small, calla-like, light pink or white flowers (spathes), but they are considered insignificant and are typically removed to reserve the plant's energy for its big, beautiful leaves.
A Caladium bicolor, commonly called angel wings, 'White Wonder' is a Brazilian tropical plant that thrives in warm temperatures with high humidity and will not survive in prolonged temperatures below 65°F. It can be grown as a tender perennial in Zones 10-11 or as a cheerful houseplant or summer bulb in colder regions. 'White Wonder' caladium looks its best planted in naturalistic groups or masses in beds, borders, hanging baskets, and patio pots. It makes a great thriller in a mixed garden container.
Easy to grow and relatively maintenance free, 'White Wonder' caladium grows best in a shady to dappled shade spot, but it tolerates sun more than most, especially in colder regions. It prefers soil that is organically rich, slightly acidic (pH 5.5-6), and evenly moist. It likes to be watered frequently; however, good drainage is essential to ensure it is never oversaturated, which can cause root rot. A heavy feeder, 'White Wonder' caladium benefits from regular fertilization, typically once a month. It's deer resistant, and with proper care, it will return for years.
Plant 'White Wonder' caladium bulbs (tubers) in warm spring soil after all threat of frost has passed, spacing them 6 to 8 inches apart and 1½ to 2 inches deep with rounded side with "eyes" facing up. Or start 'White Wonder' tubers indoors in flats or pots filled with damp peat moss or vermiculite and transplant once temperatures warm. Remove the main "eye" (shoot) before planting for a more evenly rounded plant.
In cold climates, dig up tubers in fall, immediately after foliage die back or before first frost, and overwinter in a dry location with cool temperatures that never dip below 45°F. Store container plants indoors.
