  • Description / Heuchera Firefly Coral Bells

Heuchera Firefly is a native evergreen perennial grown primarily for its bushy basal mound of scalloped, maple- or ivy-like leaves that grow to a mature height of 12 to 24 inches. Beginning in early summer, large, airy panicles of tubular red flowers are held aloft the foliage on long, slender stems. Although the flowers are not considered the plant's showiest feature, they bloom in abundance and definitely add to its overall appeal. The flowers will dry on the stems and still be quite appealing but removing the flower stalk after blooming will give the plant more energy to grow more leaves.

Heuchera Firefly (Syn Heuchera 'Leuchtkafer'), commonly called coral bells, alumroot, or simply heuchera, is a cold hardy, bushy, clump-forming plant suitable for Zones 4-9. Shown to best effect when grouped or massed, Firefly is perfect for edging a garden path and is great addition to beds, borders, containers, rock gardens, and woodland areas.

Extremely low maintenance, Firefly heuchera grows best in a location with partial to dappled sunlight and rich, humusy, medium moist, freely draining soil, preferably with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0-7.0). Good drainage is essential to avoid root rot, and a winter mulch will help to prevent root heaving. Deadheading faded flowers encourages a continuous bloom.

Plant Firefly heuchera roots in spring, spaced 12 to 18 inches apart and 1½ to 2 inches deep.

Heuchera is a native species indigenous to North America. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
