  • Description / Rhododendron Sweet Reward™ Pink Azalea

A Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs variety, Rhododendron Sweet Reward™ Pink Azalea is a deciduous shrub that reaches a mature size of about 3 to 6 feet tall and wide, depending on growing conditions. This head-turning, hardy, native shrub puts on a spectacular spring show, setting large, fluffy, globe-shaped clusters of bright pink flowers. Wonderfully fragrant and pollinator friendly, these darling flowers emit a rich, spicy-floral fragrance that will waft through the garden and attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

A Rhododendron hybrid, commonly called azalea, Sweet Reward Pink has an upright habit that works well as a specimen or mass planting in beds, borders, and foundations. Sweet Reward Pink is also a perfect fit for shade gardens.

Sweet Reward Pink azalea is a low maintenance shrub that grows best in a sunny to partly sunny spot in the garden or landscape. It prefers moist, well-drained soil with organic matter and an acidic pH around 5.0 to 5.5. But it grows well in most soils, including clay soils.

A native plant, azalea is indigenous to North America. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.

Sweet Reward Pink azalea was developed from North American native species by NCSU's Dr. Jim Ballington.
