Dahlia 'Orange Impact' Bulbs

'Orange Impact' is an exceptionally tall fimbriata dahlia that typically grows 27 to 48 inches tall but can reach 62 inches tall in optimal conditions. Blooming heavily from summer to mid fall, often to first frost, it sets fringy double flowers with layers upon layers of high-energy orange petals. Borne on strong, sturdy stems, they're attention grabbing in garden or vase. And you'll have plenty for both because the more you cut 'Orange Impact', the more it blooms. Harvest dahlia blooms when almost fully open.

A Dahlia hybrid (Decorative x Semi Cactus), commonly called fimbriata dahlia, 'Orange Impact' is a clump-forming, tender perennial (Zones 8-11) with an upright habit that works well in the back of garden borders and beds or in containers. A tall plant, 'Orange Impact' may benefit from being staked or caged.

'Orange Impact' dahlia grows easily in a sunny spot with rich, porous soil that drains freely, yet still holds enough water for the roots. Add organic soil amendments, such as peat moss or ground bark, to heavy clays that are slow to drain or to very sandy soils that do not hold water. Plant 'Orange Impact' bulbs in warm spring soil after all danger of frost has passed, spacing tubers 18 to 24 inches apart and 3 inches deep. Water thoroughly at planting and frequently while actively growing, making sure that water reaches the roots. Mulch plants to keep the soil moist and cool. Fertilize in early spring and late summer, pinch back plants at 8 to 10 inches tall, and cut back some of the taller stems to promote bushy foliage and an abundance of blooms. Divide dahlias in fall.

'Orange Impact' dahlia tubers can also be started indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last anticipated frost date. Plant 1 tuber per 5- to 8-inch pot filled with potting mix and place in a warm, sunny spot. Plant or place containers outdoors in spring after all danger of frost has passed.

NOTE: In Zones 3-7, the bulbs will need to be lifted before the first frost and overwintered inside, storing tubers at 50°F in dry peat moss or vermiculite. However, dahlias can be grown as annuals in all Zones.
