  • Description / Gladiolus Midnight Blossom Blend Bulbs

Midnight Blossom Blend contains 2 large-flowering gladiolus varieties: Black Beauty gladiolus and Bunga gladiolus. Two statuesque and heavy summer-blooming beauties, they rise to impressive heights on stately stems—reaching to between 36 and 60 inches tall—and create a stunning, if unusual, color combination, with Bunga's brilliant colors highlighting the lighter interiors of Black Beauty's velvety, deep maroon blooms, which appear almost black. The spikes are dense with multiple flower buds that open into showy funnel-shaped flowers from the bottom up, making long-lasting cut flowers for summer bouquets and mixed floral arrangements.

Midnight Blossom Blend contains Gladiolus spp. varieties, commonly called gladiolus, glads, or sword lilies, that are perennials in Zones 7-10. For the most stunning color show, plant Midnight Blossom Blend gladiolus in groups in borders, beds, or containers. They're a great option for a rock garden and a must-have for a cutting garden. Support these taller varieties in windy areas by staking them as needed.

Midnight Blossom Blend gladiolus are simple to grow and flourish in sunny to partially shaded spots with fertile, well-draining soil that retains moisture. Amend sandy or clay soils with organic materials such as peat moss or bark to improve their structure. Fertilize lightly after planting and again in summer with a balanced plant food. Water thoroughly during planting and consistently during growth and flowering. A layer of mulch will help retain moisture and keep the soil cool.

Plant Midnight Blossom Blend gladiolus bulbs (corms) in a wind-protected area after the risk of frost has passed. Place bulbs 4 to 6 inches apart and plant them 4 to 6 inches deep. Stagger plantings every two weeks in spring for a prolonged blooming period. Once the blooms fade, allow the foliage to grow until it browns or frost threatens. Then, lift the corms, clean and dry them, and store in a cool, dry spot (40-50°F) until spring.
