  • Description / Gladiolus 'Zizanie' Bulbs

'Zizanie' is a large-flowering gladiolus that adds more than a little Za Zing! to the summer garden. Its 16- to 36-inch vertical flower stalks rise above an upright fan of lush, sword-shaped leaves and open from the bottom up, revealing orchid-like blooms with bright painterly splashes and splotches of red and white color. These eye-catching flowers make a big impression, whether in garden or in a vase.

A Gladiolus x hortulanus variety, commonly called gladiolus, glads, or sword lilies, 'Zizanie' is a perennial in Zones 7-10. For the most drama, group or mass 'Zizanie' gladiolus in borders, beds, containers, and even rock gardens. Support taller varieties in windy areas by staking them as needed.

'Zizanie' gladiolus are simple to grow and flourish in sunny to partially shaded spots with fertile, well-draining soil that retains moisture. Amend sandy or clay soils with organic materials such as peat moss or bark to improve their structure. Fertilize lightly after planting and again in summer with a balanced plant food. Water thoroughly during planting and consistently during growth and flowering, but never leave the soil soggy. A layer of mulch will help retain moisture levels and keep the soil cool.

Plant 'Zizanie' gladiolus bulbs (corms) in a wind-protected area after the risk of frost has passed. Place bulbs 4 to 6 inches apart and plant them 4 to 6 inches deep. Stagger plantings every two weeks in spring for a prolonged blooming period. Once the blooms fade, allow the foliage to grow until it browns or frost threatens. Then, lift the corms, clean and dry them, and store in a cool, dry spot (40-50°F) until spring.
