A smaller variety, Hosta 'Whirlwind' stands just about 18 inches tall and 35 inches wide at maturity. Grown for its showy heart-shaped foliage, 'Whirlwind' flaunts dramatically variegated and slightly twisted leaves that have wide, irregular dark margins and a creamy center that changes to lime green and then turns to dark green as the season progresses. In early to late summer, Hosta 'Whirlwind' sends up trumpet-shaped pale lavender flowers that rise gracefully on tall, slender scapes above the lush foliage. These blossoms attract hummingbirds and butterflies and can add a delicate touch to mixed floral arrangements.
A Hosta undulata variety, commonly called plantain lily, Hosta 'Whirlwind' is a shade-loving, clump-forming perennial, extremely hardy in Zones 3-9. It has a symmetrical, mounding habit and grows fairly fast, though full maturity may take several years. Long-lived, it returns year after year more robust, enhancing their appeal. Hosta 'Whirlwind' shines when planted in masses as ground cover or arranged in flowing drifts throughout the garden. Its versatility also makes it an excellent choice for borders, foundation plantings, containers, and edging. Additionally, it pairs well with spring bulbs, filling in as bulb foliage fades.
