Description / Hymenocallis 'Sulphur Queen' Peruvian Daffodil Bulbs
Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit
Hymenocallis 'Sulphur Queen' is an award-winning Peruvian daffodil that blooms late spring to midsummer, putting on intriguing display of exotic flowers rising above attractive, long, and strappy leaves. Each leafless flower stalk rises to about 18 to 24 inches tall and sets 2 to 3 large, trumpet-shaped flowers with a frilly-edged soft yellow cup, 6 long ivory petals, and a striking emerald-green throat. They have a citrus-like scent that's very strong, particularly at night, and they attract pollinators to the garden, including bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies.
A Hymenocallis variety, commonly called ismene, spider lily, and Peruvian daffodil, 'Sulphur Queen' is a South American native that's hardy in Zones 8-11, where it's a good naturalizer. In colder regions, 'Sulphur Queen' can be treated as an annual or the bulbs can be lifted before frost and overwintered indoors. The plants are suitable for container growing, both outdoors and indoorsa 3-gallon or larger decorative pot is suggested.
Reliable and easy to grow, 'Sulphur Queen' grows best in a sunny to partially shady location with organically rich, moist, freely draining soil. Water freely in the growing season but keep dry when dormant. The plant is generally pest and disease free.
Plant 'Sulphur Queen' bulbs in warm spring soils after all threat of frost has passed and temperatures are consistently above 60°F, spacing them 18 -24 inches apart and 2 inches deep.
