Paeonia 'London' is a late-blooming peony with a small stature, only growing 24 inches tallbred for patio pots and small-space gardens. Blooming prolifically in late spring, 'London' sets masses of fragrant, fully double blooms with layers and layers of raspberry-pink petals. Borne on short, stout stemsperfect for cuttingthe frilly flowers sit perched above a bed of glossy, deep green leaves that remain vibrant and lush all season and often take on purple, rusty orange, or golden hues in fall.
A Paeonia lactiflora, commonly called simply peony or Chinese peony, 'London' is a dependable, long-lived herbaceous perennial for Zones 3-8, known for its fast growth and upright, bushy habit, this versatile peony serves as a striking standalone specimen or accent plant. It is recommended for, but not limited to, growing in a 6- to 10-inch pot.
Low maintenance and easy to cultivate, 'London' peony thrives in sunny or partially shady spots with airy, fertile, medium moist, and well-drained soil. Afternoon shade is beneficial in areas with hot summers, and the plant should be protected from harsh winds. Consistent watering, particularly during heat weather, is essential. A spring application of fertilize supports its heavy feeding needs. Naturally resistant to deer and rabbits, this peony can be grown just about anywhere.
In spring, plant the entire 'London' peony root 1½ inches deep in potting soil. Peonies require a minimum of 8 weeks of cold winter temperatures to successfully develop buds. Warmer conditions promote root growth, while cooler temperatures stimulate the emergence of shoots (eyes). To support healthy shoot development, make sure the plants meet their cooling requirements. If grown in the garden, choose a sheltered spot and keep them away from trees and shrubs to avoid competition. Peonies prefer to be undisturbed and don't transplant well. They require cold winters for proper bud development, which can make them less suitable for growing in Zones 9 and above.
