Description / Delphinium Giant Cottage Style Mixed Larkspur

Delphinium Giant Cottage Style Mixed Larkspur is a grower's choice mixture containing varieties in gorgeous shades of pink, lavender, red, white, and yellow. Grown for their towering and colorful flower stalks, giant larkspurs have statuesque stalks that stand 3 to 5 feet tall and up to 2 feet wide. They bloom in summer and again in fall, setting loads of bold, billowy blooms that are butterfly and hummingbird magnets.

These Delphinium varieties, commonly called larkspur, are cold-hardy perennials (Zones 3-7) but are often grown as annuals in the warmer climates in their range. They are a must-have in cottage gardens and cutting gardens. They are shown to best effect when grouped or massed, adding a magnificent, vertical, blooming backdrop to garden beds and borders.

Larkspurs prefer climates with cool summers, and may struggle in hot, dry, or humid weather. They grow best in a sheltered, sunny to partly shady spot with fertile, medium moist, freely draining soil having a pH around 7.0. Give them consistent moisture, never letting them completely dry out. Adding a layer of mulch will help to keep the soil cool and moist. Morning sun and afternoon shade may be beneficial in warmer climates. Fertilize in spring and again mid-season to support their showy blooms. Stake them early in the season at about 12 inches tall to keep them standing tall and to prevent the hollow stems from breaking. After the first bloom, cut back faded flower stalks to the basal foliage to encourage a second bloom in late summer to early fall. Deer and rabbit typically leave larkspur alone.

In spring, plant larkspur roots 1½ to 2 inches deep, spaced 18 to 24 inches apart. Note: delphiniums can be toxic if ingested. Keep them out of the reach of small children and pets.
