Description / Dicentra 'Fire Island' Bleeding Heart

Dicentra 'Fire Island' is a highly popular and improved version of Burning Hearts that grows faster, blooms earlier in the season, a flowers more prolifically. A compact variety with a bushy habit, 'Fire Island' only grows 10 to 15 inches tall at full maturity—perfect for a small-space garden or patio pot. It blooms longer than typical bleeding hearts, bearing heart-shaped magenta red flowers from early spring into midsummer. The sprays of nodding flowers sit perched above a mound of finely textured, fern-like foliage that's a beautiful frosty blue color. The foliage stays fresh throughout the growing season and looks good even out of bloom, but the color really makes the flowers 'pop'. Both the sprays of dangling blooms as well as the frilly foliage make great additions to cut flower arrangements.

Commonly known as bleeding heart or fern-leaved bleeding heart, 'Fire Island' is a cold-hardy perennial that thrives in Zones 4-7. It's a gorgeous bed, border, and container plant that fits beautifully into any style of garden but is especially nice in cottage gardens and rock gardens. It can be grown as a ground cover or an underplanting for shrubs, as long as it receives adequate sun. 'Fire Island' does not produce seed, which allows it to bloom longer into the season than most bleeding hearts.

A sun-loving alpine type, 'Fire Island' bleeding heart grows best in a partially shady to shady spot with fertile, humusy, and freely draining soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. The soil should never be allowed to dry out during summer, and some afternoon shade may prove beneficial. Disease and critter resistant.

Plant the 'Fire Island' Bleeding Heart root in spring burying it 1½ to 2 inches deep. If planting more than 1, spacing them 18 to 24 inches apart.
