Description / Dicentra 'Gold Heart' Bleeding Heart

Dicentra 'Gold Heart' is a golden-leaved form of the common bleeding heart that grows as a loose clump or mound, reaching 18 to 24 inches tall, and blooms in mid to late spring, putting a truly spectacular show, typically April through May. 'Gold Heart' is an outstanding bleeding heart with bright, fern-like chartreuse foliage punctuated by long and delicate arching sprays of heart-shaped, rosy-pink and white flowers, which make excellent bits in cut flower arrangements.

A Lamprocapnos spectabilis variety, commonly called bleeding heart, 'Gold Heart' is a cold hardy perennial suitable for Zones 3-9. It is a perfect addition to a woodland garden but is also a nice container plant. It's also a great filler plant in spring beds, but its foliage dies back in summer, so its best planted with hostas, ferns, geraniums, or sedge, which begin to fill in as the foliage begins to die back.

'Gold Heart' grows best in partially to fully shady spots with rich, average to medium moist, loose, freely draining soil. Some morning sun with afternoon shade may be best. They will not grow well in heavy clay soils. Cutting back plants to about 6 inches after flowering will encourage the foliage to rejuvenate itself.

Plant 'Gold Heart' Bleeding Heart root in spring, spacing them 24 to 36 inches apart and 1½ to 2 inches deep.
