Description / Echinacea 'Fatal Attraction' Coneflower

Echinacea 'Fatal Attraction' is a native wildflower that grows in a bushy, upright clump 18 to 24 inches tall and blooms all summer. Borne on stiff, nearly black stems clad with large and toothy dark green leaves, the upward-facing daisylike flowers have magenta rays that perfectly frame its bronzy orange central cone. Sweetly fragrant, they fill the garden with pollinators, including butterflies and hummingbirds, and make stunning cut flowers for summer bouquets and mixed floral arrangements. The end-of-season seed heads also attract songbirds.

An Echinacea purpurea, commonly called purple coneflower or simply echinacea, 'Fatal Attraction' is a cold-hardy, herbaceous perennial in Zones 3-8. A quintessential cottage garden plant, purple coneflower is perfect for grouping in beds, borders, and containers. It's a must-have for a wildflower garden, pollinator garden, or a native plant garden. It's often grown with black-eyed susans (rudbeckia) and makes a great companion for Russian sage (perovskia), salvia, and catmint (nepeta).

Sturdy, reliable, and easy to grow, 'Fatal Attraction' echinacea withstands the elements and requires minimal care. It grows best in a sunny to lightly shady spot with average, dry to medium, freely draining soil, but it isn't picky and will tolerate poor soil, drought, heat, and humidity. It's also deer resistant. Echinacea freely self-seeds if faded blooms are not removed.

Plant 'Fatal Attraction' echinacea roots in spring, placing 12 to 18 inches apart and 1½ to 2 inches deep.

A native plant, purple coneflower is indigenous to central and southeastern United States and grows wild in moist prairies, meadows, and open woods. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
