Description / Geranium 'Rozanne'
Winner of the Plant of the Year® award in 2008
Royal Horticulturist Society Award of Garden Merit 2006
It is easy to see why Geranium 'Rozanne' has been called "The Geranium of the Millennium." It has won numerous awards and impressed gardeners world-wide from its garden trials at the University of Georgia to the Chelsea Flower Show. In fact, the Royal Horticultural Society has named 'Rozanne' the "Plant of the Centenary," the society's top honor in 100 years of flower shows.
With such an impressive resume, Geranium 'Rozanne' shouldn't need to speak for itselfbut it certainly does. This versatile and hardy variety blooms profusely all season long and loves the heat and humidity best. Geranium 'Rozanne' reaches approximately 12 to 24 inches tall with a somewhat wider spread at its peak and blooms all summer. Whereas most geranium varieties begin to wilt in midsummer when the temperatures soar, Geranium 'Rozanne' continues with the spectacular bloom show all the way through early fall. The large saucer-shaped blooms have a distinctive white eye and are striking shades of violet-blue with reddish-purple veining. The vibrant flowers "pop" against the attractive mound of deep green foliage with delicate chartreuse marbling and beckon butterflies by the droves.
Geranium 'Rozanne', commonly called hardy geranium or cranesbill is an herbaceous perennial known for its vigorous growth and sprawling habit that forms a dense mat, which makes it a wonderful filler plant for the landscape that returns year after year, bigger and better. But Geranium 'Rozanne' does not aggressively self-seed and is not considered invasive. Gardeners love to plant this beauty in groups or masses in beds, borders, patios pots, and containers.
Geranium 'Rozanne' is generally quite adaptable to a variety of growing conditions and requires little maintenance if properly planted and established. Though it prefers moist, well-drained soils, it tolerates periods of drought once established a good choice for southern gardens. Hardy geranium will grow in full sun or part shade; however, in too much shade, its habit will be less compact and fewer flowers will be produced. If flowering lags or the foliage begins to look raggedy during the hot summer weather, simply trim it back by half to rejuvenate the plant. A new flush of foliage will quickly take its place. Hardy geraniums is generally considered pest free and deer resistant.
In spring, plant the Geranium 'Rozanne' root 2 inches deep. If planting more than 1, space them 1 to 2 inches apart.
