Description / Gladiolus 'Princess Margaret Rose' Bulbs

'Princess Margaret Rose' is a large-flowering gladiolus that hits the summer garden like a tropical heat wave with radiant sun-soaked colors. Its 36- to 48-inch-tall flower stalks rise above an attractive fan of strap-like leaves as they burst into bloom, setting ruffled flowers in a hot mix of red, yellow, and orange hues. Exceptionally beautiful, these flamboyant flowers virtually glow in the garden and make florist-quality cut flowers for monofloral bouquets and mixed floral arrangements.

A Gladiolus x hortulanus variety, commonly called gladiolus, glads, or sword lilies, 'Princess Margaret Rose' is a perennial in Zones 7-10. To enjoy a spectacular gladiolus display, plant 'Princess Margaret Rose' bulbs in clusters or masses in garden beds, borders, or containers. They even work well in a rock garden. In windy areas, tall plants may need staking for support.

'Princess Margaret Rose' gladiolus is easy to grow, thriving in sunny to lightly shaded spots with rich, porous soil that drains well but retains moisture. For sandy or clay-heavy soils, enrich with organic amendments like peat moss or ground bark to improve water retention and drainage. Fertilize sparingly after planting and again in midsummer. Keep the soil moist by watering deeply during planting and regularly throughout the growing season. Mulch around the plants to maintain moisture and cool soil temperatures.

Choose a protected site and plant 'Princess Margaret Rose' gladiolus bulbs (corms) after the frost danger is gone. Space them 4 to 6 inches apart and plant 4 to 6 inches deep in spring. For continuous blooms, plant new bulbs every two weeks. After flowering, let the foliage remain until it browns or frost nears. Dig up the corms, clean and dry them, and store in a cool, dry area (40-50°F) for winter.
