Description / Gladiolus 'Purple Magic' Bulbs

A large-flowering gladiolus, 'Purple Magic' is an enchanting beauty with tall flower spikes that rise above a lush fan of long, strappy leaves on stately 24- to 36-inch stems. Intensely dark and sultry, the multicolor purple flowers evoke a sense of majesty and mystique in the summer garden. Bee-friendly, the nectar- and pollen-rich blooms entice pollinators to the garden, including butterflies and hummingbirds. But cutting them for summer bouquets may be just too hard to resist.

A Gladiolus x hortulanus variety, commonly called gladiolus, glads, or sword lilies, 'Purple Magic' is a perennial in Zones 7-10. Plant this glad in groups or masses within beds, borders, or containers for a dramatic floral display. And 'Purple Magic' is a great addition to cutting gardens and pollinator gardens. In breezy areas, this tall gladiolus may require staking for stability.

'Purple Magic' gladiolus are adaptable and thrive in full sun to partial shade, preferring rich, porous soil that drains efficiently but retains some moisture. Amend overly sandy or heavy clay soils with organic materials like bark or peat moss. Fertilize lightly after planting and again during summer. Water thoroughly during planting and regularly during growth and blooming to ensure moisture reaches the roots. Use mulch to maintain even soil moisture and temperature.

Select a spot sheltered from wind and plant bulbs in warm spring soil once frost risks have passed. Space 'Purple Magic' gladiolus bulbs (corms) 4 to 6 inches apart and plant them 4 to 6 inches deep. For extended flowering, plant additional bulbs every two weeks throughout the season. After blooming, let the foliage grow until it browns or frost arrives. Lift, clean, and dry the 'Purple Magic' corms, then store them in a cool, dry location (40-50°F) for winter.
