Beginning in late winter, this hardy hellebore sets 3-inch, slate grey to dark purple double blooms, standing tall on sturdy stems among glossy evergreen foliage. The showy flowers attract bees and make stunning cut flowers for kitchen table bouquets and nosegays.
Best when massed or grouped, Lenten roses should be planted where they can naturalize, as they spread with an extensive root system. A moist woodland area is a perfect location. However, since they are drought and salt tolerant and deer and rabbit resistant, they are fairly easily grown almost anywhere and even work well in patio containers. In mixed beds, asarum, ferns, brunnera, carex, and heuchera are good companions.
