Description / Helleborus Frost Kiss® Cheryl's Shine®

Cheryl's Shine® Hellebore, a part of the Frostkiss® series, is an evergreen perennial offering year-round interest. One of the first in the series to bloom, Cheryl's Shine flowers freely, uniformly, and continuously starting in winter. The 2- to 3-inch outward facing to slightly nodding flowers are relatively large and have light-pink petals with a touch of coral and a spot of bright yellow stamens. Gracefully perched upon long, deep-red stems, the blooms rise above a lush, basal rosette of marbled foliage. The nectar-rich flowers endure for an extended period in the garden, where they play a vital role as an important early food source for emerging bees, but they also last a long time in a kitchen table bouquets.

A Helleborus hybrid, commonly called hellebore or Lenten rose, Cheryl's Shine is an herbaceous beauty with moderate to vigorous growth and an upright, mounding habit. Hellebore is a versatile plant. It's a nice specimen in garden or container but looks its best when massed or grouped in beds and borders. This plant is a great ground cover as it slowly spreads through rhizomatous roots—without becoming invasive—and is ideal for planting beneath high-branched deciduous trees or large shrubs, where it's offered protection from winter winds.

This perennial is easy to grow and requires minimal maintenance. Cheryl's Shine hellebore adapts well to various soils, including chalk, clay, and loam, and thrives in diverse growing conditions. But for optimal growth, choose a dappled shade location with organically rich, moist, freely draining soil, maintaining a neutral to alkaline pH. The plant is deer, rabbit, and drought resistant once established but does not tolerate extremely wet, waterlogged soils. In mild summer climates, Frostkiss hellebores flourish in full sun, provided their roots are kept cool.

Helleborus are early blooming evergreen perennials with nodding flowers that delight in your winter garden. Follow our expert's advice on Hellebore Planting and Care and learn more about these long-lived plants in our blog All About Hellebores.
