Description / Hippeastrum Red Southern Landscape Amaryllis Bulbs
Hippeastrum Red Southern Landscape Amaryllis contains a variety of red amaryllis. Amaryllis are a popular choice for holiday gifts when potted, but they also thrive beautifully in garden settings. Exceptionally easy to grow, these bulbs often produce multiple flower stalks. Each stalk, measuring 18 to 30 inches tall, can yield 2 to 6 stunning blooms, with each flower reaching up to 8 inches in diameter. Featuring a tropical trumpet-like shape, these vibrant flowers bloom over an extended period and are remarkably long-lasting.
These Hippeastrum spp. varieties, commonly called amaryllis, are tender bulbs that typically need to be grown indoors in pots across most of North America. In warmer USDA Zones 8-10, however, these bulbs can be planted outdoors, provided they are shielded from freezing conditions. When planting outside, position the bulb with its neck protruding above the soil, water thoroughly, and fertilize after the leaves have appeared. Repeat fertilizing throughout the spring, then allow the plant to grow naturally.
For indoor growth, choose a 6- to 8-inch pot and fill it halfway with soil. Position the bulb on top, then backfill with additional soil to secure the bulb, ensuring that the top third remains exposed above the soil line. Leave space in the pot to allow for watering. Amaryllis thrives in room temperatures and bright light, which helps keep the plant compact. To prevent the flower stalk from leaning as it grows, rotate the pot regularly.
Although some gardeners discard their amaryllis after it blooms, the bulbs can be encouraged to re-flower with proper care. Here's how: After flowering, trim the flower stalk just above the bulb's neck, leaving the foliage intact to help restore the bulb's energy. Place the pot in a sunny window and water only when the soil is dry. Fertilize regularly to promote healthy growth. Once the danger of frost has passed, move the pot outdoors for the summer. In the fall, when frost kills the foliage, remove the leaves and store the bulb in a cool, dry location for 2½ months without watering. After the rest period, you can begin the growing cycle again as described above.
