Description / Hosta White Feather Plantain Lily

A small variety, Hosta White Feather grows to a mature size of about 20 inches tall and 12 inches wide. Grown for its eye-catching foliage, this unusual hosta has wavy, lanceolate leaves that emerge creamy white in spring but turn greener as they mature with only streaks of white remaining. During early to late summer, White Feather hostas produce elegant, tubular flowers in a pale lavender hue that rise high above the foliage on slender scapes. The blooms are irresistible to hummingbirds and can also be used as charming accents in mixed floral arrangements.

A Hosta hybrid, commonly called hosta or plantain lily, White Feather is a hardy, shade-loving perennial that thrives in Zones 3-9. With a symmetrical, mounding growth habit, it establishes quickly but takes a few years to reach full maturity. Each year, it returns larger and more robust. This versatile plant is stunning when massed to create a ground cover or grouped into drifts that wind through the garden. This hostas also works beautifully as a bedding, border, foundation, container, and edging plant. It complements spring-blooming bulbs by filling in as the bulbs' foliage fades and is a must-have in woodland gardens, especially beautiful planted beneath large trees.

Low maintenance and adaptable, White Feather hosta requires minimal care once established. It thrives in dappled to full shade with rich, moist, and well-drained soil, ideally with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. While tolerant of various soil types, it requires consistent watering to prevent drying out. But 'White Feather' hosta will not tolerate full sun. An annual application of slow-release fertilizer helps 'White Feather' maintain its vibrant appearance.

For best results, plant White Feather hosta roots in spring, spacing them 12 to 36 inches apart and burying them 1½ to 2 inches deep.
