Description / Iris 'Casablanca' Dutch Iris Bulbs

'Casablanca' is a Dutch iris that blooms in late spring. Borne on sturdy stems that rise18 to 24 inches tall above a grassy clump of leaves, the exquisite, pure white flowers have a yellow eye and resemble birds in flight. The orchid-like blooms make long-lasting, florist-quality cut flowers that add an airy, fairy-like feel to bouquets and floral displays.

An Iris x hollandica species, commonly called iris, 'Casablanca' is hardy in Zones 5-9. In colder climates, it can be grown as an annual or the bulbs can be lifted and stored over winter. The plant returns for years and is a great option for naturalizing. 'Casablanca' creates a lovely display in garden beds and borders when planted in groups of 15 bulbs per square foot. It can also be grown in decorative pots and the bulbs can be forced throughout the year.

'Casablanca' iris grows best in a sunny spot with rich, porous soil that drains freely but holds enough water for the roots. Heavy clays and soils that drain slowly or very sandy soils that don't hold water should be amended with a 3- to 4-inch layer of peat moss or ground bark incorporated to a depth of 10 inches. While actively growing, water frequently and thoroughly so that water reaches the roots. A 2-inch layer of mulch prevents the soil from drying out, keeps the soil cool, and protects the bulbs from frost in colder climates. Fertilize twice a year. Remove faded flowers immediately but only cut back foliage after leaves have yellowed and died. 'Casablanca' is deer and rabbit resistant.

'Casablanca' iris bulbs can be planted in fall in warmer Zones or in the spring after all danger of frost has passed in cooler Zones. Place the bulbs 4 to 6 inches apart and 4 to 6 inches deep.
