Description / Iris 'Cherry Sugar Rush' Siberian Iris

American Iris Society Award of Merit

Iris 'Sugar Rush' is a striking Siberian iris that grows 24 to 34 inches tall and blooms and reblooms from late spring through early summer. Each strong, sturdy stem holds 3 bicolored flowers that rise just above a compact, vase-shaped mound of narrow, grass-like blue-green leaves, creating a bouquet effect. The watermelon pink amoena flowers have a blue and purple wash on the styles and yellow highlights on the pearly pink standards. The veined and speckled falls have cheery yellow signals and can open several shades darker or lighter depending on the weather. Perfect for cutting, the flowers make romantic monofloral bouquets and are lovely additions to mixed floral arrangements.

An Iris sibirica variety, commonly called Siberian iris, 'Sugar Rush' is a cold hardy perennial suitable for Zones 4-9. A rhizomatous plant, it spreads over time, so it's perfect for naturalizing in wild gardens or along the edges of ponds or water gardens, but it should not be grown in standing water. Siberian irises also look great grouped or massed in garden beds and borders.

Siberian iris perform best in cooler conditions and require a cold dormant period. 'Sugar Rush' flowers best in a sunny location but some afternoon shade may be appreciated in hot summer climates; however, too much shade will result in fewer flowers. 'Sugar Rush' prefers organically rich, moist, freely draining soil with an average to slightly acidic pH (5.2-6.4); but it tolerates a wide range of soils, including dryer soil once established. Add a layer of oat straw, pine needles, rotted sawdust, or wood chips after planting to conserve moisture. Apply a nitrogen rich fertilizer each spring and remove faded bloom stalks to prevent any unwanted self-seeding. Deer resistant.

Plant 'Cherry Sugar Rush' iris with 'eyes' just below the soil surface, spacing them 12 to 24 inches apart.
