  • Description / Lycoris aurea Yellow Spider Lily Bulbs

Plant yellow spider lily bulbs before the first frost in fall, and late the next summer they bloom when many plants are preparing to go dormant. A highly sought-after collectors' variety, yellow spider lily is larger than its cousin red spider lily—with larger flowers, leaves, and bulbs. Its clusters of golden orange flowers are reminiscent of azaleas and sit atop strong, leafless stems rising 18 to 24 inches tall. Frilly and fragrant, the blooms on this popular heirloom are coveted cut flowers for late spring bouquets and floral arrangements. Left in the garden, they sustain pollinators, including butterflies and hummingbirds.

This Lycoris aurea species is commonly known by many names: spider lily, yellow spider lily, golden spider lily, magic lily, surprise lily, naked ladies, and September lily. It's also sometimes called the resurrection flower because the flower spikes seemingly rise from the dead in late summer. Spider lily is a long-lived bulbous perennial with an upright habit. Once planted, yellow spider lily bulbs do not like to be disturbed, so container growing is recommended only when grown as annuals. But they are perfect for clustering in garden beds and borders.

Plant yellow spider lily bulbs 8 inches apart and 4 to 6 inches deep. Choose a permanent spot with plenty of sunshine; however, some shade may prolong blooming. Water bulbs frequently during the growth cycle, but let them dry out during the dormancy period in summer. Mulch lightly over winter, especially in northern ranges. Feed spider lilies with Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food when growth begins to appear. Once established, yellow spider lily is a drought tolerant, carefree garden plant that resists deer and rodents.
