Description / Lonicera 'Major Wheeler' Honeysuckle

Simply the best red-flowered honeysuckle ever grown, Lonicera 'Major Wheeler' delights with its entirely mildew-free foliage! What a difference these lush leaves make : they remain dense and lovely until frost, and the flowers keep coming as well, unbelievably abundant and not ready to quit until summer's end. And the habit is quite versatile, equally inclined to climb as a vine, mound up, or stretch along the garden floor. If you are partial to butterflies and hummingbirds, or if you need quick cover-up of a wall, fence, or unsightly garden presence, Lonicera 'Major Wheeler' is waiting for you.

Each long, slender, trumpet-shaped bloom is a radiant shade of red with yellow tips and interiors. Hummingbirds take notice, and there are more blooms than you can imagine, appearing in large dangling clusters, all over this plant. They begin in late spring and last through summer, standing out brilliantly against the dark foliage.

Although Lonicera 'Major Wheeler' grows most quickly and flowers most heavily in full sun, it can tolerate a bit of shade. Once established it is very drought tolerant, and of course it revels in the humidity that reduces older varieties to bare stems by summer's end. We highly recommend it for brilliant vertical color. Zones 4-8.

Your patience will be rewarded
Review by Mark
I ordered two of these in 2020. During the first summer they each remained a humble sprig of leaves on a single stem, got lost among weeds and other plants, and I thought they were goners. In 2021 they surprised me by surviving the winter, climbing up a few feet, and putting out a few tentative red flowers. But let me tell you — in 2022 they took over, in a good way, completely covering the vertical supports they were climbing, and exploding with flowers. Major Wheeler delivers a huge flush of exotic red blooms in the spring, and then continues blooming throughout our New Jersey summer. Once established it's a vigorous vine that grows many feet per season, and can be cut back hard. The red flowers look exceptional with other cottage garden plants, more so than a yellow honeysuckle in my opinion, although unfortunately they lack a detectable honeysuckle scent. For visual appeal, vigor, habit and re-blooming: highly recommended.

BEST FOR HUMMERS!
Review by Cynthia
This takes a little time to get established but it is great for vertical appeal and most definitely will attract hummingbirds guaranteed!! Lots of blooms but sadly absolutely NO fragrance at all. Still great for the bird gardener

I've had this plant before and I love it. It arrived in excellent condition. Lost my mature plant in a storm and I'm sure this new one it will perform as good as my last one, which I purchased from Wayside G. Never have had a problem with a Wayside Garden's plant!

Still waiting
Review by Love my plants!
I planted in April 2015 and although it grew and climbed quickly I literally only got one flower all year. It survived the winter nicely so I'm hoping to get a wall full of flowers this year! Keeping fingers crossed.

Hummingbird magnet.
Review by Lois, gardener for sixty years
This flowering vine grows fast and is covered with flowers all season. I have never seen any plant that draws hummingbirds like this Major Wheeler honeysuckle.

Wow!
Review by GeorgiaPeach
I planted this vine in its little 4.5" pot in the fall of 2010 on the corner of an outbuilding 50 ft behind my house. Last spring and summer it grew to the roof line and 2 ft wide. The blooms are striking and easily seen from my windows. This honeysuckle impresses. A most gratifying planting.

Beautiful plant
Review by Sandra
I love this plant. I planted it in front of my stair railing and it's grown quickly to a nice size. Pruning is not necessary but it cuts back well if you need it smaller. The foliage is thick and the flowers eye-catching. My only complaint is that it lacks fragrance.
