Description / Mangave Art & Sol™ 'Catch a Wave'
A member of the Proven Winners® ART & SOL™ collection, 'Catch a Wave' is a compact succulent, reaching 8 to 10 inches tall and 18 to 20 inches wide, grown for its attractive architectural rosette of wildly undulating leaves that look like silvery blue waves and give the plant a supercool appearance from every angle. The thick leaves develop heavy dark spotting in the sun and curl up at the edges to show off marginal teeth, which are soft and very flexible.
A second-generation intergeneric cross of Manfreda x Agave, X Mangave 'Catch a Wave' has a moderate to rapid growth rate and an upright, mounded habit. It is a frost-tender herbaceous plant that can be grown as a perennial in southern Zones (9-11), but in the North, it must be overwintered as a houseplant or grown as an annual.
'Catch a Wave' is a xerophyte that will grow with minimal water once established, so it is a great option for xeriscapes, rock, alpine, and waterwise gardens. 'Catch a Wave' makes a uniquely beautiful solitary specimen or mass planting in garden beds and borders. But it's an excellent container plant and a fabulous thriller in a mixed container garden. It tolerates a wide variance in moisture conditions, so it can be mixed with annuals, succulents, and tropicals, and it's a great companion for agastache, ajuga, dianthus, iberis, lavandula, and sedum.
'Catch a Wave' grows best in a sunny location with average soil and moisture but tolerates dry conditions and poor soils. It also tolerates heat and drought and resists deer and rabbits. A one-time application of Organic Diehard™ Transplant Stress Relief will get your plant off to the best possible start.
Mangave 'Catch a Wave' has native parentage, indigenous to arid and semi-arid regions of Central and North America. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
