Description / Paeonia 'Hillary' Itoh Peony

American Peony Society Gold Medal 2020

Paeonia 'Hillary' is a compact Itoh peony that grows to a mature size of 24 to 30 inches tall with a slightly wider spread. A highly floriferous spring to midsummer bloomer, it sets massive, exceptionally beautiful semi-double to double blooms that have a lovely color gradation, with their pink heart retaining its inner glow as the outer petals fade to cream shades, giving some a two-tone effect. Displayed on stout stems against a backdrop of dark green leaves, the lightly fragrant flowers make gorgeous cuts for summer bouquets. The finely textured foliage stays lush throughout the summer and colors up in autumn, shading purplish or gold.

An Itoh peony, also called an intersectional peony, 'Hillary' is a rare hybrid between a tree peony and an herbaceous peony. This unique perennial (Zones 2-8) combines the finest traits of both parent plants. Compact and bushy, 'Hillary' fits beautifully into mixed beds, borders, and containers, making it a striking focal point. It's particularly stunning when planted in groups, where it can create a charming low hedge or serve as a backdrop for spring bulbs. With proper care and positioning, this tough, cold-hardy peony can thrive for 100 years or more.

Easy to cultivate, adaptable, and low maintenance, 'Hillary' peony prefers a sunny to partially shaded spot with protection from strong winds. It thrives in humus-rich, medium moist, and well-draining soil. Water frequently while actively growing and add a layer of mulch to keep soil cool and moist. In late fall, prune the foliage back to the ground. Naturally resistant to deer and rabbits, this peony is a resilient choice for any garden.

For planting, bury the 'Hillary' Itoh root in spring to a depth of 1 to 2 inches and space them 36 to 48 inches apart if planting multiple peonies. Renowned for their cold tolerance, peonies require an extended winter chill period to break dormancy and grow successfully, making them ideal for colder climates.
