Description / Paeonia 'Peppermint Stick' Peony

Paeonia 'Peppermint Stick' is a late-blooming peony with a rare and unusual beauty. The plant grows approximately 24 to 36 inches tall and blooms heavily in late spring, setting very attractive chrysanthemum form flowers. Aptly named, its blushing white blooms have red candy cane striping on ruffled petals and a large sunny spot of golden stamens with red carpel tips. A florists' favorite, the multicolored blossoms make extraordinary cut flowers for spring bouquets.

Paeonia lactiflora, commonly known as Chinese peony or simply peony, 'Peppermint Stick' is a hardy and long-lived herbaceous perennial suitable for Zones 3-8. Returning reliably year after year, this peony thrives for decades if left undisturbed. It has a fast-growing, upright, shrubby form with glossy green foliage that stays attractive through the season and may develop vibrant fall hues of purple, rusty orange, or gold. 'Peppermint Stick' makes a stunning specimen or accent plant and is especially eye-catching when planted in groups or masses in mixed beds and borders.

Low maintenance and easy to grow, 'Peppermint Stick' peony thrives in sunny to partly shady spots with rich, fertile, medium moist, and well-draining soil. Afternoon shade is particularly beneficial in hot climates, and the plant should be protected from strong winds. Regular watering is essential, especially during periods of extreme heat. As a heavy feeder, this peony benefits from spring fertilization once new growth appears. It is naturally resistant to deer and rabbits.

For optimal growth, plant the 'Peppermint Stick' peony 3/5 root in a protected spot, spacing them 3 to 4 inches apart and 1½ to 2 inches deep. Choose a location carefully, away from trees and shrubs, as peonies dislike competition and do not transplant easily after establishing. Peonies require cold winters to develop buds, making them harder to cultivate in Zones 9 and above.
